Automatic Drawing helps you to create without being concerned about the final product. I.e., you can let preconceptions of quality or artistic merit aside and permit yourself to play. Automatic Drawing was an exercise introduced by Austin Osman Spare who describes the process in his book, The Book of Pleasure (1913).

The Surrealists used Automatic Drawing as a way to allow their subconscious mind to act as the director of the exercise, thus leaving their conscious mind on the sidelines. Automatic Drawings can be devoid of anything representational or they can (as in my examples in the graphic below) allow representational images to present themselves via the foundational markings.
